Journey to Turkey 2016

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Kuwait to Turkey

Six photographers from, or connected to, the Gulf region were invited by the Crossway Foundation and Art Jameel to travel to Turkey from 12 – 23 May 2016. There they collaborated with local photographers and arts initiatives in Istanbul, Cappadocia and Ankara and explored the theme of “migration” under the mentorship of Turkish visual artist Merve Ünsal who acted as Project Mentor.

During their time in Istanbul, the team met and had portfolio reviews with conceptual artist and photographer Orhan Cem Çetin, Kerimcan Guleryuz, Owner & Director of The Empire Project and Cemre Yesil, photographer and Founder of Fil Books, visited the studio of artist-photographer Ali Taptık, heard talks from prominent photographers, artists and curators such as Bikem Ekberzade, Özge Ersoy, Zeynep Beler, Beril Gür, and Sevim Sancaktar at cultural institutions including Istanbul Modern and collectorspace. The team also explored and photographed Istanbul’s picturesque Prince’s Islands with members of Geniş Açı Project Office (GAPO) and NAR Photos.

They then travelled to Cappadocia where they enjoyed a sunrise hot air balloon trip and visits to the famous volcanic landscape of fairy chimneys and underground cities with photographer Ahmet Özyurt, as well as working on their own personal projects.

At the end of their time in Turkey, the participants worked with Ankara-based collective Ka Atölye to put on an exhibition of their work and to produce a publication based on this year’s theme. The theme was interpreted literally by some of the artists, thinking about moving bodies from place to place, while others remixed their own cultures and backgrounds to produce new visual languages. An online version of the publication is available by clicking here.

All films from the Journey to Turkey are available by clicking here and a selection of photographs is available by clicking here.

"This has been such an inspiring endeavour for me as an artist. Working with such a diverse group of participants and being part of this collaborative experience was quite unique. I look forward to further conversations with everybody involved in the project."
