Journey to the UK 2013

Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates to the United Kingdom

Create & Inspire 2013 was a regional search to find the most talented young artists, photographers and filmmakers living in Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

The Crossway Foundation selected 10 winners whose work successfully responded to the theme ‘Public Art: Re-imagining Your Community’. Louna, Engy, Shaweesh, Ahmed, Abdulaziz, Mohanna, Asma, Nadine, Nour and Mohammed took part in the journey of a lifetime to the United Kingdom in August 2013.

The winners were in the UK between 18 – 30 August 2013, working with top creative industries in both London and Yorkshire, including Christie’s Education, Mile End Community Project, Serpentine Galleries and Edgware Road Project, Tate Britain, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Adam Williamson (sculptor) and Bold Tendencies.

The end result of the winners’ time in the UK was an exhibition titled ‘Bye Bye Landan’ held at the Edge of Arabia Gallery on Thursday 29 August 2013. The event was an evening of art, poetry, music, film and food, and was a chance for the 10 winners to share their experiences in front of an audience of over 100 people. This initiative was made possible thanks to the generous support of the following organisations: Community Jameel, Qatar Museums, Qatar UK 2013, Saudi Aramco, The Mohamed S. Farsi Foundation and Etihad Airways.

“I really enjoyed the experience and took so much away from it. I loved the workshops, each one had so much to offer, and I now have a sketchbook full of ideas and inspirations that I collected throughout the trip. My work has definitely been influenced, and I am already working on a project that is inspired by some of the public artworks that we saw.”
