United Kingdom, Egypt, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Malaysia to Saudi Arabia
In 2011, the Crossway Foundation launched Arabia Offscreen, an international competition to find a dynamic team to take part in a creative and cultural journey to Saudi Arabia, supported as part of HSBC's Arabian Journeys programme.
Nine young artists from the United Kingdom, Egypt, Qatar, Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates with the potential to inspire their peers, were selected to take part in this journey of a lifetime. Ahmed, Awais, Hamida, Lizzie, Lujain, Marouan, Raisa, Seb and Syaza spent two weeks in Saudi Arabia to creatively explore what life is really like in the Kingdom. With unparalleled access to sites, cities and the creative community, the young team recorded their journey through blogs, films, photographs and artworks, the aim of which was to shed light on a country which remains stereotyped and undiscovered, in order to promote tolerance and peer-to-peer learning.
Inspired by a collaboration with the British Museum, the material produced throughout the journey contributed to a wider educational programme, focusing on the theme of pilgrimage and Hajj, delivered in schools and communities across the UK.
All films from the Journey to Saudi Arabia are available to view by clicking here.
"The expedition really inspired me to want to give back, not only on a Gulf level, but also on a universal level, in terms of smashing those Arab stereotypes and proving to the world that there's much more to us than what they think."
Hamida Al-Kawari, Qatar
